The Pond

Our final resting spot took us back to The Pond on Gloucester Rd.

A few pints in we decided that this indeed was going to be our local from here on in - especially as they had a snakes and ladders board (can you adam it - grown men, snakes and ladders?) and there was no one else in there to take offence at our childish behaviour.

The Pond rocks (but don't go there on a Wednesday as there's a bunch of muppets there!).

Hare and Hounds, Preston Circus

In an attempt to get parity on the venue to domicile ratio (ie going to pubs nr each others houses!) this weeks turn was Phil Dennis - he lives on the dark side of town - so Giles Frost (pictured) suggested we go to the Hare and Hounds at Preston Circus.

A disaster - no TV and the Man Utd semi-final was on - so we walked in and out again.

The Belle Vue

Located nr Brighton Station on Terminus Rd is this slightly unassuming yet funky boozer called "the belle vue".

This was the location for our latest road test of the pub in order to find our truly favourite local.

My thoughts I'll share with you later - but if you have any comments on this pub in Brighton then please leave your comments below.

A disastrous night pre-occupied with score card bits of paper in a not too enticing environment.

Giles Frost quotes "Morning. I have transposed Phil's scoring system on to the match ratings. This has not been straightforward, as converting from the 7 point match system to a 5 face scorecard, is not an easy calculation. The methodology used was to score the top score from last night as an 8, going down to a 4 for the worst. There are also some difficulties in aligning some of Phil's criteria with the recognized and agreed previous criteria. Additionally - Jimmy must have been drunk because his scores are very high.
Additional commentary re lamps, art work, pub golf team, anti-photo taking gestapo, individual performance of group members etc., much welcomed preferably via website but do feel free to post comments via email "

Not an engaging start then.

It was then that we received the following rant from Joe Aparo. "Cause for alarm here fellahs. The customer service team are not happy with this result. Early reports show that the focus group are way out of line.

62% is dangerously high isn’t it? Considering none of us liked the pub much and the nasty man shouted at Ed.
How can you get a weighted total of 40 for a big screen for a pub that has no big screen????

We need solutions here people – not problems.

Giles I appreciate that cross referencing from a pictographically aberrational response card system may have posed minor problems but the skew here is just too wide. If one person’s random scoring of 8’s can almost make us go back to the Quadrant then we need a rethink on the 65% another week criteria (How about we make it 73.25%???). Otherwise it would take just one too many high scoring pen-happy mavericks and before you know it we are in the Bat and Ball every week. That can not happen. That must not happen and that can not happen.

We are not, I repeat NOT, through the looking glass here people.
I want R & D working night and day to sort this glitch. They can have Tuesday mornings off in lieu – oh and every other Thursday between 1400 and 1600 hours for time with their families. (But only the ones with families).
I am NOT almost going back to the Quadrant. Except unless the golfing ladies return – or its nearby, or I’m a bit thirsty"

Interestingly Jimmy had cause then to answer to Joe's comments "I am feeling very guilty….I am sure (but I was pissed) that I had argued that the marking should be on reflection and therefore can not be overly influenced by your drunkenness. Indeed I thought I had thrown the scoring card away and said I would vote today….maybe I am wrong I don’t know…..

More questions what happens if we allow guests to vote from some northern back water where the mere sight of other human forms is something to get excited by, they then vote highly for the pub with other human forms in and before we know it we have made the Winner is our local after all there is a dartboard and many Bobby George types, bling bling chav … jesus this doesn’t bare thinking about…..

Does the group feel that some training provided by “tron meets lawnmower man” is urgently required so that we can post scores the following day?

Ok so not entirely newsworthy, but certainly noteworthy for our contributors. This Brighton Pub review has now been visited and cached by Google. Here's a screen grab of the site indexed.

Palmeira scores are in

And the scores are in for the Palmeira in Davigdor Road in Hove and a mid to average score for them.

The problem seems to be the lack of atmosphere on a Wednesday night in January (funny that!) and the lack of lasses.

On a more positive note the Palmeira in Hove seemed to score well for it's big screen footy action - the night we were there Birmingham City beat Newcastle 5-1.

An overall score then of 59% on our weighted score card index which means sadly that the Palmeira won't warrant a return visit from the Pub Review contributors.

So on to the Quadrant next week then, let's hope for a better score in our search for the perfect local in Brighton and Hove.

As a group of Brighton lads we're setting out with the task of reviewing some of Brighton's pubs in order to find that perfect "local".

We'd welcome your comments and remarks - as you'll see on the post below Giles Frost has come up with a weighted score index that we'll be completing on every pub we visit, every wednesday night!

Good day. Following yesterdays thinktank - I have formed a task and finish group to construct a weighted scoring index for wednesday evening. Please see enclosed. You may wish to comment on weighting system, or try out the method for yourself. Miscellaneous is just that - can cover additional entertainment, games, etc., You may also query the 70% criteria for staying for another week. Any additional categories can be added by committee. If someone can bring a clipboard for next week then that will help with the survey.
